3d monitors rule CES 2010

Nearly every manufacturer that makes displays of any kind were showing off 3d televisions due out later this year.  From LCD to rear projection DLP, and powered up by 3d enabled Playstation 3s and a brand new 3d Blu-Ray format, you couldn’t move more than 10 feet at this years CES in Las Vegas without running into something shouting 3D.

And I say… Its about time!  I am one of the computer gamers who has my PC rigged up with a 3d monitor, and I have been trying to tell everyone for a long while now.  Games are much, much cooler in stereoscopic 3d.

The same way on-the-fly 3d rendering in games like Wolfenstein 3D revolutionized video gaming nearly 20 years ago, stereoscopic 3d is set to revolutionize gaming once again.   Maybe it was the eye-popping visuals and the resulting box office records set by James Cameron’s new Avatar movie that finally got manufacturers excited.  Whatever it was, I am glad that there is finally some traction behind getting 3d into homes.

Another bit of great news for 3d lovers is the announcement of the upcoming 3d Blu-Ray format.  Unfortunately, we will all be required to buy new Blu-Ray players that can play the new 3d discs, but the format will produce fully HD Blu-Ray quality 3d images.  Finally, the movies that blew your mind in the theaters are coming home in 3d.  There are also rumors of a 3d television format that may be announced in the next year.

Sony was showing off a Playstation 3 with new firmware that allowed it to display a Gran Turismo racing game in 3d.  It looked awesome, and it is time to hurry up and get it firmware update released.  I would go back and play all of my old playstation 3 games that I got tired of if they were in 3d the same way I did all of my old PC games when I got my iz3d 3d monitor.  Games you don’t even really like are sometimes awesome again in 3d.  And some already good games, like Batman Arkham Asylum, are mind-blowing awesome in 3d.  So lets cross our fingers and hope all this technology makes it out as schedules!

If you want to play games in 3d now and are already tired of waiting, you can play nearly all of your favorite computer games in 3d now.  Check out my review of the best 3d monitors for gaming to get started.
